International Travel: Device and Account Access

Issue/Question
  • What device, account, and resource access will I have while traveling internationally?

Overview

A guide to understanding resource access for international travel for personal and DSU devices.

Account Access

To be eligible for account access to DSU resources (email, SharePoint, etc.) while traveling internationally, approval must be granted. Approval is granted through the "International Travel Technology Request" process.

Users who do not get approval before travelling internationally (for personal or business reasons) will be unable to sign into their DSU account to access DSU resources. Approval and authorization are not granted retroactively, travel requests must be completed before travel.

Personal Devices

For personal phones and tablets to access any DSU resources, proper approval must be granted. See section "Account Access" for additional details.
MAM is not currently an available option for personal laptops.

MAM Enrolled
Personal devices will need to be enrolled in DSU's MAM policy to have access to DSU managed applications.

DSU Managed Applications include, but not limited to:

  • Outlook
  • SharePoint
  • OneDrive
  • Word
  • Excel
  • Microsoft 365
  • Edge
  • Teams

Copy, paste, download, and print are restricted actions. The listed actions are only allowed from DSU managed applications to other DSU managed applications. Applications not managed by DSU are not under any action restrictions.

MAM Unenrolled
Personal devices that are not enrolled in DSU's MAM policy will only have access to browser based resources.

Browser based resources include, but not limited to:

  • microsoft365.com
  • office.microsoft365.com
  • dakotastateuniversity.sharepoint.com

DSU Devices

DSU work provided devices are not authorized for international travel.

Loaner Devices

Loaner devices are optional and may be requested while completing the "International Travel Technology Request" form.

Loaner devices only have access to DSU resources through a browser, no applications will be installed. The intention of a loaner device is to prevent the risk of losing a personal laptop. Losing a personal laptop can have considerable consequences on data loss and workflow, requiring a completely new set-up. ITS recommends taking a loaner device.
