New User Accounts Pickup and Portal Setup Instructions


All DSU staff, faculty and students have two accounts to setup which give users access to several different systems made available by DSU and SDBoR (state-wide).  All new students and employees will start with the pickup account process to get started.  This article will help NEW users pick up your accounts, reset passwords and setup your MyDSU portal.

Account Descriptions:

DSU Network Account:  This account gives you access to many services offered by DSU.  To keep your accounts safe, we highly recommend you create a unique password – one that you don’t use anywhere else.  Some of the services that will required your DSU account are:  Webmail, Outlook, Office365, wireless access, printing, IA lab, VM View and personal web space.

BORIS (Board of Regents Identity System):  this account gives you access to the SDBoR services used by all universities in the SD system including:  MyDSU Portal, WebAdvisor, Desire2Learn (D2L), Starfish and ImageNow.


Step 1:  What are My Accounts?

On the DSU home page (, click the MyDSU link in the top right corner.
Under Trouble Logging In, click on the Lookup Your Accounts button.


Under What are My Accounts, click the Lookup Accounts button. 

Enter your Colleague ID or last 4 of SS#, last name, and birth date.

Record/Print your BORIS, DSU Network User name, Colleague ID & email address. 

Select Start Over (upper left had corner)


Step 2:  Reset Your DSU Network Password


Under Reset My DSU Network Password, click on Reset Password

Enter the last 4 digits of your SSN, last name, and birth date.

Set password. Submit.  A reset successful message will display.

Select Start Over (upper left had corner)


Step 3:  Reset your BORIS Password


On the MyDSU accounts page ( under Reset My BORIS Password, click on Reset Password. 

Enter your last name and Colleague ID or BORIS username.

Click Retrieve my information

Note your user name given at the top and select your DSU email account.  This is the email account containing the link to reset your password.

Click Send me a link to reset my password.


Step 4:  Log into your DSU WebMail Account

Access this site in a web browser or from the MyDSU page, under the Links for Former Students, choose the Webmail option.


Enter DSU\DSU Network User Name as noted from the What are My Accounts Step 1.

Use the password you chose in the Reset My DSU Network password step.

Click Sign InNote: For first time login, you may need to set Time Zone.


Once you are logged into your DSU email account, locate and open the email titled “Password Reset Link”.   Click on the link contained in the email. 

Enter the BORIS username that you noted above and set a new BORIS password.  
The BORIS password must be at least 6 characters but no longer than 15 and must contain a number.
This is the password you will use on future logins to WebAdvisor, D2L, and the MyDSU portal.


Step 5:  Log into the MyDSU Portal

NOTE:  For Windows users, Internet Explorer (IE) is recommended.  For Mac OS users, Chrome or Firefox is recommended.  Safari is not recommended.

On the DSU home page (, click the MyDSU link in the top right corner.  

Then click on Login to MyDSU Portal.   Enter your BORIS username and password that was set in the BORIS password step above.  Click on the DSU icon or the DSU Student button on the navigation bar.

Click on the DSU icon or Menu > DSU Student > DSU Student Home.

Click on Try Entering Your Credentials in the Webmail web part.

Enter your DSU network username and password as prompted (ex, hrsmith).  A message will display showing unread message.  Click on the dsu-exchange link to access your DSU Webmail.
