Installing Lockdown Browser

Issue/Question
  • How do I install Respondus Lockdown Browser?

  • What if I do not have admin priveleges to install LDB on my device?  (see Lab Version)

Overview

Respondus LockDown Browser is the online proctoring solution used for D2L quizzes at Dakota State. If enabled by the instructor, it will "lock down" the student's computer until the quiz is complete, preventing access to other sites or apps.

Respondus Monitor is an add-on that also records the student during their quizzing session.

Environment

  • D2L

Resolution

Individual Version
  • Intended for students’ personal computers
  • Requires local admin rights to run
  • Can be installed by students by clicking on any quiz that requires Respondus LDB, then selecting Download Respondus LockDown Browser
Lab Version
  • Intended for managed computers
  • Does not require local admin rights to run
  • Can be installed by IT staff using the SDBOR Respondus distribution course
  • Does not force updates, although it’s strongly recommended to download the newest version at least once per year (you will get a pop-up notice after one year, but it can be dismissed)

Note: There is a course in Discover (on D2L homepage navbar) that allows students to test Respondus LDB on a practice quiz (Install and Test Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor). Sometimes faculty will also put a practice quiz in their own course.
