The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) is a federal law that states that a written policy be established and made available regarding the privacy rights of students. DSU complies with this law by not giving access to or disclosing any information, except directory information, from student's educational records without the written consent of the student. DSU considers the following as directory information: student name, address, email address, telephone number, date and place of birth, major field of study, dates of attendance, degrees, and awards received, the most recent previous educational agency attended, participation in officially recognized activities and sports, and weight and height of members of athletic teams. Exceptions to this policy can be found on the DSU website https://dsu.edu/records-registration/ferpa-student-records.html.

Students may withhold the release of directory information by notifying the registrar's office in writing at the beginning of each term they are enrolled.  To complete the form use this link: https://support.dsu.edu/TDClient/1796/Portal/KB/ArticleDet?ID=136428
