Overview:

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) is a federal law that protects the privacy of student education records.

DSU follows BOR requirements regarding the release of directory information. The following can be released without the student's written permission:

  • Student's Name
  • Grade Level or Academic Status (undergraduate, graduate, or professional school)
  • Graduation Date
  • Diploma or Degree
  • Major Field of Study
  • Dates of Attendance

Email, address, and telephone listings are NOT considered directory information and never released off-campus. If you have a specific request from local law enforcement please refer them to Student Services or the Registrar's Office.

NEVER release the following:

  • Social Security Number or Part of SSN such as last 4 numbers
  • Student ID
  • Class Schedule
  • GPA or Grade Information
  • Whether a student is On-Campus or Online
  • Student Specific Financial Information

Students are given the opportunity each semester to "Withhold Information".
These students are identified in:

- Banner Admin system with a yellow warning message on their record - "WARNING: Information about this person is confidential"
- Banner Self-Service system with a bright orange Lock symbol and CONFIDENTIAL tag on their student profile.
- DegreeWorks system with a STUDENT REQUESTS PRIVACY Release no information tag in the profile header

Do not release anything about the student, including the above directory information.
Students who wish to permit access to their education records or with questions should contact the DSU Registrar's Office via phone at 605-256-5144 or email DSU-Registrar@dsu.edu.
