Overview
After changing your Dakota State University (DSU) account password, your DSU-owned, domain-connected Windows computer may not immediately recognize the new password when signing in.
This can occur when you change your password while off campus or when your computer has not connected to the DSU campus network since the password change. The computer may continue using your previously saved password until it can communicate with the DSU domain and update its locally stored sign-in credentials.
This article explains how DSU faculty and staff can update their Windows sign-in credentials on a DSU-owned, domain-connected computer.
Applies To
Users: DSU faculty and staff only
Devices: DSU-owned, domain-connected Windows computers
Issue: Windows does not recognize a recently changed DSU account password
Important: This procedure does not apply to personally owned computers, student devices, or DSU computers that are not connected to the DSU domain. If you are unsure whether your computer is domain-connected, contact the DSU Support Desk before proceeding.
Before You Begin
If you recently changed your DSU account password, keep the following in mind:
- When your computer is off campus and cannot communicate with the DSU domain, you may need to use your previous password to sign in to Windows.
- When accessing DSU email and other university network resources, use your new password if prompted.
- To update the password stored on your computer using this procedure, you must connect the computer to the DSU campus network using a wired connection.
- You must know your new DSU account password.
Why does this happen? Domain-connected Windows computers can store sign-in credentials so you can access your computer when the campus network is unavailable. After changing your DSU account password, the locally stored credentials may not update until the computer reconnects to the DSU domain.
Instructions
Update Your Windows Sign-In Password on Campus
- Bring your DSU-owned, domain-connected Windows computer to campus.
- Connect the computer to the DSU campus network using a network cable or a docking station with a wired network connection.
- Sign in to Windows using your previous password if your new password is not yet accepted.
- Lock your computer using either of the following methods:
- Press Windows key + L.
- Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete, then select Lock.
- At the Windows lock screen, press Ctrl + Alt + Delete or any key to display the sign-in screen.
- Enter your new DSU account password to unlock the computer.
What happens next? When the computer successfully authenticates your new password against the DSU domain, Windows updates its locally stored sign-in credentials. You can then use your new password to sign in to the computer.
