What Is The Difference Between NC-SARA, SARA & SD-SARA?

Summary

A short way to explain the importance they play in State Authorization.

Body

NC-SARA
National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement (NC-SARA) establishes a state-level reciprocity process that supports the nation in its efforts to increase the educational attainment of its people by making state authorization more efficient, effective, and uniform.   https://nc-sara.org/about-nc-sara

SARA
The State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement (SARA) is a national initiative that increases student access to distance education courses and programs while maintaining compliance with state regulations. SARA establishes uniform standards for distance education for all participating institution and states. Since DSU participates in SARA, DSU can offer educational opportunities in 49 SARA member states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.  California is not a SARA state.

SARA is led by the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (NC-SARA) – in partnership with four regional education compacts. SARA is open to all qualified degree‐granting institutions in SARA member states – public, private, independent, non‐profit, and for‐profit -- who pay between $2,000 and $6,000 annually based on enrollment. As of July 2021, almost 2,300 institutions participate in SARA, representing more than 5 million students nationwide.

SD-SARA
The South Dakota Board of Regents (SDBOR) on behalf of the State of South Dakota, entered into an agreement to participate in the National Council for State Authorization Agreements (NC-SARA). South Dakota’s agreement is through the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE).  WICHE is one of the four regional compacts who administer SARA.
