Chat Tool

Launching the Chat Tool

The Chat tool in WebCT is a Java applet. When you first open it, a security warning window may pop up asking you to accept the applet. Click "Yes" to proceed.

Chat supports real-time conversations among students, and between student and instructor. There are a total of six chat room: four for dedicated tasks of small groups, one general forum for the class. There is also a general chat room to interact with students from other courses. Conversations in the first four dedicated rooms are recorded. Only your instructor can see the records

Entering Messages

When you click a chat room and open it, you'll see the chat window below, which has three main areas:
  1. The Output Interaction Box displays all messages sent and received.
  2. The Users Logged In box shows the users presently in the room.
  3. The Enter your message below text box where you type your messages.

To exit the chat room, click the Quit button. Please note that some users have found in the past that exiting a chat room by simply closing the chat window may cause affect the normal functioning of the chat room for other participants. So, please use the Quit button to exit the chat room.

Sending a Private Message to Someone

By default, your message will be sent to everyone logged in this chat room. If you want to send a message to someone in private, you can select that person from under Users Logged In box. To select more than one recipient, hold the CTRL key while selecting the names.

Saving Chat Text

Conversations in the first four dedicated rooms are recorded, but only your instructor can see the records. If you want to save the chat text, you can use the mouse to highlight the text in the Output Interaction Box and then press CTRL and C keys simultaneously. A quick key combination to do this is to use the middle finger of your left hand to hold down the CTRL key and use the index finger to press the C (copy) key. The highlighted text will be copied into the clipboard (temporary memory, invisible to you).

You can then paste the copied text into any text editor. A quick key combination to paste is to use the middle finger of your left hand to hold the CTRL key, and use your index finger to press the V key. The copied text will be pasted into the text editor you have chosen.
